About Your Costa Rica Host

My Expertise

Curt Peters – Host of the January 2027 Costa Rica Wildlife & Photography Retreat

Hi, I'm Curt Peters, award-winning professional photographer and owner of Digital Dunes Photography in Florence, Oregon. With over 50 years behind the lens and a deep love for wildlife, landscapes, and capturing life's magic, I've built my career photographing everything from weddings and portraits to fine art wildlife prints sold worldwide.

But if there's one place that has truly captured my heart and shaped my work, it's Costa Rica—and especially the wild, untamed Osa Peninsula.

I've been traveling to Costa Rica since 1989, making more than 20 trips over the decades. From the misty cloud forests to the steamy lowlands of Corcovado National Park (often called the most biodiverse place on the planet by National Geographic), I've hiked countless trails, waited patiently in blinds for the perfect shot, and witnessed moments that still take my breath away: a pair of Scarlet Macaws soaring overhead in brilliant morning light, a Keel-billed Toucan perched in the rain-soaked canopy, a Sloth quietly foraging at at Sunrise, or poison dart frogs gleaming like jewels on rainforest leaves.

These experiences aren't just memories—they've honed my eye for composition, light, and behavior in challenging tropical conditions. I've learned to anticipate wildlife movements in dense jungle, work with unpredictable humidity and rain, and chase that golden-hour glow filtering through the canopy. Costa Rica isn't just my favorite destination; it's where my wildlife and macro photography truly evolved, teaching me patience, respect for nature, and the art of seeing the extraordinary in the everyday wild.

What makes Costa Rica so special to me? It's the raw, unfiltered magic: the symphony of howler monkeys at dawn, the sudden flash of color from a bird in flight, the quiet intimacy of spotting a monkey high in the trees, and the pure joy of being immersed in a place where biodiversity explodes around you. After all these years and visits, every trip still feels like discovery—never routine, always humbling.

For this January 16–28, 2027 all-inclusive photography /wildlife retreat on a private 50-acre reserve bordering Corcovado, I'll bring that lifetime of expertise directly to you. As your guide, you'll benefit from:

  • Personalized, hands-on instruction in wildlife and bird photography techniques tailored to the Osa's unique environment
  • Pro tips on gear, settings, and field ethics for ethical, stunning captures
  • Guidance in Adobe Lightroom Classic processing to bring your raw jungle shots to life (color correction for humid greens, sharpening feathers, noise reduction from low light)
  • Insider knowledge of the best locations, times, and behaviors—gained from decades of boots-on-the-ground exploration
  • A relaxed, supportive pace that balances thrilling shoots with poolside downtime, hot tub soaks, and Pura Vida (Pure Life) relaxation.

Whether you're an experienced photographer looking to elevate your wildlife portfolio, a passionate birder wanting closer encounters, or someone craving creative inspiration amid nature's masterpiece, I'll be there to help you see—and capture—Costa Rica the way I do: with wonder, skill, and joy.

Join me for this intimate retreat and let's create images (and memories) that last a lifetime.

Ready to step into the jungle with me? Spots are limited—book your spot now and come make photographs or observations that you will cherish for years to come.
